About the Role:
The Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) at Keystone Pediatric Dental plays a critical role in supporting pediatric dental care by performing advanced clinical tasks under the supervision of a licensed dentist. This position focuses on delivering high-quality dental assistance tailored specifically to children, ensuring a comfortable and positive experience for young patients. The EFDA will be responsible for preparing treatment rooms, assisting during dental procedures, and performing expanded functions such as taking impressions, placing and carving restorations, and applying sealants. This role requires a compassionate approach to pediatric care, excellent communication skills to interact effectively with children and their families, and strict adherence to infection control and safety protocols. Ultimately, the EFDA contributes to the efficient operation of the dental practice and the delivery of exceptional oral health care to pediatric patients.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Expanded Function Dental Assistant certification/license as required by the state.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of an accredited dental assisting program.
- Current CPR certification.
- Experience working in a pediatric dental setting or with children is highly recommended.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Additional certifications in pediatric dental assisting or sedation monitoring.
- Experience with dental software and electronic health records (EHR).
- Strong background in behavior management techniques for pediatric patients.
- Bilingual abilities to effectively communicate with diverse patient populations.
- Continuing education in dental assisting and pediatric oral health.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the pediatric dentist during examinations and dental procedures by anticipating needs and providing appropriate instruments and materials.
- Performed functions include taking dental impressions, placing and carving restorations, applying sealants and fluoride treatments, and fabricating temporary crowns as permitted by state regulations.
- Prepare and maintain treatment rooms, ensuring all instruments and equipment are sterilized and ready for use in compliance with infection control standards.
- Educate young patients and their caregivers on oral hygiene practices and post-treatment care instructions to promote long-term dental health.
- Maintain accurate patient records, document procedures performed and communicate effectively with the dental team to coordinate patient care.
Skills:
The required skills enable the EFDA to perform clinical tasks efficiently and safely, ensuring that pediatric patients receive high-quality dental care. Strong communication skills are essential for explaining procedures and calming young patients, while technical skills allow the assistant to competently perform expanded functions such as restorations and impressions. Organizational skills are used daily to maintain a clean, sterile environment and manage patient records accurately. Preferred skills, such as proficiency with dental software and bilingual communication, enhance the ability to provide personalized care and streamline office operations. Together, these skills support a collaborative dental team environment focused on delivering exceptional pediatric dental services.
