Dr. Jagdeep Kaur, psychiatrist at Keystone Behavioral Health, shares specific ways to cope with stress in a healthy way.
Cope with stress
There are many healthy ways to cope with stress. Every human being is different and they respond differently to stress. There is a possibility that one coping skill might not work for one person but will work for another one. We have to find out which coping skill is working best for us to manage our stress. Try following these healthy tips to lower the stress in your life.
Get moving
Exercise releases endorphins which boost mood. It is recommended to do moderate exercise at least 30 minutes or more at least 5 days a week. You can design your exercise schedule based on your physical needs and limitation. Always start slowly. Just about any form of physical activity can help relieve stress. Activities that require moving both your arms and legs are effective at relieving stress. Remember regular exercise is going to help—it does not matter how intense it is.
Change your reaction
There are some stressors in our lives we cannot avoid, but we can make some changes to the way we react to the situation. Try changing the situation by avoiding the stressor or altering the stressor. Also try changing your reaction. You may need to adapt to the stressor or accept the stressor. We will only be able to change our perspective on the situation if we are ready—sometimes it takes a lot of thinking such as weighing pro’s and con’s to make change.
Avoid unnecessary stress
It’s okay to say no. Taking on more than you can handle is going to make your stress level go high. Avoid people who stress you out. Set priorities and drop tasks that aren’t truly necessary. Always ask for help and be willing to help others. Express your feelings in a calm and constructive way instead of expressing anger and getting upset. Try looking at the positive aspect of the situation and learn to forgive.
Adopt a healthy lifestyle
Eat a healthy diet including more fresh fruits and vegetables. Always stay hydrated and cut back on processed food, caffeine, and soda. Avoid alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs. Get enough sleep and always make time for fun and relaxation. Anything healthy that makes you happy? Do that! Try walking, connecting with others, writing a journal, taking a long bath, massage or listening to music. And always keep your sense of humor.
