Get to know Sarina Akers, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Keystone Behavioral Health!
How did you decide to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner?
Ten years ago, I suffered from postpartum depression and it took about 6 months for me to connect to a mental health provider. This opened my eyes to the need for more mental health providers in Franklin County and with my family’s support I was able to pursue my degree.
Where did you receive your education?
I received my undergraduate degree, BSN, from WVU in Morgantown, WV, and my graduate degree, MSN, at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA.
What do you like about working in the mental health field?
Getting to help patients and their families.
What is your favorite part of your job?
All the different people I get to meet.
Why did you choose to work at Keystone?
To work for a community-focused practice and a smaller organization where resources are here in Franklin County.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
Spending time with family, gardening, and taking care of pets – we have 2 dogs, 3 cats, and our kiddo (daughter).
Where is your hometown and, if you are new to the area, what do you like about Franklin County so far?
I have lived in Franklin County for almost 15 years, and grew up just down the road in Martinsburg, WV. I enjoy the different festivals, the food, and the people.
What’s an interesting fact about yourself or something people might be surprised to know about you?
I love science fiction and fantasy. I grew up watching movies like Dune and Star Wars, and enjoy reading books like Ender’s Game and the Wheel of Time series.
