Pharmacists play an important role not only in the safe dispensing of new prescriptions but also in the safe destruction of old medications. The importance of proper disposal of medications is highlighted twice a year as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Takeback Day. This national program involves pop-up takeback locations facilitating the safe removal of medications on a Saturday in April and October.
Here at Keystone Pharmacy, we not only provide this service twice a year but every day the Pharmacy is open. Keystone Pharmacy manages a permanent takeback drop-box, helping patients dispose of their medications any time that our pharmacy is open. Due to the high demand for this service, the box is kept locked until a disposal is needed. The Pharmacy staff will happily assist patients with disposing medications.
The takeback box does have some specific stipulations, as it cannot accept syringes or needles. Otherwise, all medications can be disposed of, including controlled substances. It is vital to make sure that these medications are disposed of properly and don’t fall into the hands of children or people who would otherwise misuse the medications.
The twice-yearly rhythm of Takeback Days is also a great reminder to check your medicine cabinets and shelves for expired over-the-counter medications. Especially if you’re inclined to buy in bulk, a lot of over-the-counter medications may expire before you get a chance to use them. It is important to make sure to check expiration dates on these medications and restock your supply so that you have safe over-the-counter treatments on hand.
Pharmacists specialize in over-the-counter medications and self-care. If you or a family member need counseling on what medications may help your symptoms, simply call or stop on by the Pharmacy. We’re happy to provide you with the information needed to relieve your symptoms, check for drug interactions, or refer you to additional care if needed.
