Measles may seem like a disease of the past, but cases continue to occur in the United States and around the world. Because measles is highly contagious, staying informed and making sure you and your family are up to date on recommended vaccinations remain important steps in protecting your health.
Vaccination Is the Best Defense Against Measles
The best way to prevent measles and its complications is vaccination with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine.
Vaccination also helps protect people who cannot be vaccinated, including some babies and people with certain medical conditions.
Children, teens, and adults who have not received the recommended doses may need to catch up. Certain adults, including healthcare workers and international travelers, may have additional vaccination recommendations.
If you’re unsure whether you or your child is fully protected, talk with your healthcare provider. Your provider can review your vaccination history and help determine whether you need an MMR vaccine.
